At Gurney Pease Academy we follow the Read Write Inc phonics scheme of work. Staff who deliver phonics across the school are trained in the delivery of Read Write Inc and their practice is reviewed and updated through Read Write Inc Development days, as well as through CPD led by our Phonics Lead, Mrs Jardine.
Children in Reception begin their Phonics teaching in the first few weeks of starting school. The children are grouped for phonics sessions as required within the Reception class.
Children across Year 1 and Year 2 are put into phonics groups as a result of regular assessments and receive daily phonics teaching. The children are grouped according to the phonics phase in which they are working, meaning that we have groups of mixed ages.

Children who have not passed their Phonics Screening Test by the time they leave KS1 continue to be supported in developing their phonics knowledge as they move into Key Stage 2.
Those children who need intervention in Phonics are identified and access 1 to 1 support using resources from the Read Write Inc scheme. The staff delivering these sessions have been trained by our Phonics Lead and also access support on Development Days.
Our FROG Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) was used to support children with their phonics learning at home. Children continued to access daily phonics teaching via videos provided by Read Write Inc and those recorded by staff in school; these were shared on our VLE.
