Testing prior to return - Lateral Flow Testing (LFT) - (3/9/2021)
Like many schools, we have confidence that our pupils know how to complete lateral flow tests effectively at home.
Year 8-11 Pupils
We would encourage all pupils to complete lateral flow tests on Saturday 4th September and Monday 6th September before their return to school on Tuesday 7th September. If their lateral flow test is positive, they should inform the school, book a PCR test and remain at home until the result is known. The majority of pupils completed tests in school that were overseen by experienced medical professions at school. We did so to ensure that pupils could complete tests with confidence at home.
Therefore, we believe that it is much more sensible for pupils to test at home prior to their return to school. This means that they will not be mixing with others for in-school testing, reducing the risk for all pupils, and it means that pupils will not lose valuable curriculum time. We feel testing all pupils on site based upon the model suggested by the Department for Education would involve a loss of hugely important teaching days. We feel this to be inappropriate based upon the fact that the vast majority of our pupils can test confidently at home without any subsequent impact on curriculum time.
Year 7 Pupils
Year 7 – pupils who tested during summer school, should complete 2 tests prior to attending school on Monday. If you wish your child to home test and have not yet signed up for testing, please contact Mrs Barnett via email to firstname.lastname@example.org who will arrange this for your child.
We will issue lateral flow tests to each of our pupils from the week beginning 6th September. However, if you need to order additional lateral flow tests now, please do so via this link.

Secondary schools are being asked to provide some face-to-face support to supplement the remote education of year 10 and year 12 students who are due to take key exams next year, alongside the full-time provision they are offering to priority groups. We do not expect these pupils to return to school or college on a full-time basis at this stage, and so we do not expect a full timetable to be offered as schools and colleges look to minimise the number of pupils in school or college each day. Schools and colleges should consider how best to use additional year 10 and 12 time to support these pupils who are starting their final year of study for GCSEs, A levels and other qualifications next academic year.
Once we have planned how Haughton Academy will provide some safe extra face-to-face support to our Year 10 pupils we will write to parents. All other year groups, year 7,8 and 9 should continue to work safely at home with their remote learning via on-line resources or their work packs.
For any of our Year 6 families who will be joining Haughton Academy in Septmeber please note there is a dedicated Year 6 Information page on the website. Please clck here to be directed to that page. We will post any updates regarding the rearranged transition programme on this page.
FSM families please check your emails to access your food voucher code every week. There are still a number that have not been redeemed this week.
For the attention of FSM parent/carers
We have been advised from the DFE that as of next week we must use the national FSM system provided by Edenred and stop using Wonde. This in line with all of the other secondary schools in Darlington. The system is set up so that you will receive a weekly email with your £15 voucher for you to spend on food in the same way but via email and not text. Please keep safe and healthy.
If your child develops any symptoms please follow the advice that is included on the poster information sheet below.
Current update (21/4/2020)
At present, Haughton Academy remains only open for pupils who are either children of workers critical to the coronavirus (COVID-19) response or vulnerable children. The rest of the pupils are being taught remotely via the FROG VLE. All parents/carers need to support the teaching staff to encourage the pupils to complete as much work as posssible. For further information please keep checking the Letters to Parents section of this website and the regular messages sent out via social media.
