The Geography Department at Haughton Academy focuses on creating an exciting and fulfilling learning environment.
“Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future” – Michael Palin
At Haughton Academy pupils will receive a high-quality geography education, which will inspire pupils’ curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Teaching will equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
We do this by providing a well planned and varied KS3 course and by choosing examination courses which will challenge pupils, whilst encouraging them to continue their geographical learning to an even higher level. We deliver high quality teaching, learning and assessment so that pupils will enjoy Geography, appreciate its value and importance, and see it within the wider context of their curriculum experience.
Within Key Stage 3, the Geography curriculum pupils will study local, national and global issues in relation to human and physical geography. Pupils will discover through studying the complex and dynamically changing world, where places are, how landscapes are formed, how people and their environment interact, and how a diverse range of economies, societies and environments are interconnected. Our geography builds on pupils' own experiences to investigate places at all scales, from the personal to the global.
In Key Stage 4, pupils study the AQA A specification, which has proven to be very successful at Haughton Academy. The course is made up of two exams and one piece of controlled assessment, Unit 1- Physical Geography, Unit 2 - Human Geography, Unit 3 - Local Fieldwork Investigation. A wide range of skills including problem solving, literacy and numeracy, technological skills, including ICT and GIS, graphical and cartographical skills, will provide candidates with a sound understanding of Geography and equip them with transferable skills. The topics studied are: Unit 1- The Restless Earth, Ice on the Land, The Coastal Zone. Unit 2 - Population Change, The Development Gap, Tourism. We aim to provide learning opportunities out of school, as well as within the building and grounds, including organised fieldwork with EV’s outdoor education team, as well as outside agencies. In March 2015, we successfully completed our first international fieldtrip to Iceland!
