The Education Village Academy Trust (EVAT) currently has a number of Governor vacancies across the Trust and is seeking volunteers to join an Education Standards Committee (ESC). There are no particular qualifications required for the role, but you do need to be enthusiastic about making a difference to children’s education and have time to attend meetings and training events required to fulfil the role.

Each academy has an ESC, which meet at least four times in an academic year, for a two-hour meeting. Meetings may be face to face or held virtually via Microsoft TEAMs. Governors are required to visit the school during the term and may have a link role, meaning they will focus on a particular area of education or a school priority. Each academy ESC is made up of around 9 Governors.  Governors are appointed by the Trust’s Board or may be parent or staff nominated. They will usually serve a four-year term of office.

Governors work as a team.  They are strategic and responsible for making sure the academy provides a good quality education for all pupils by raising educational standards. They do this in collaboration with the Principal, who is responsible for the day-to-day management of the academy.  All EVAT Principals are members of the ESC. The ESC is held accountable by the EVAT Board of Trustees.

Duties of an ESC member also include:

  • Reading papers in advance of a meeting and preparing challenging questions to ask the Principal and other leaders
  • Reviewing and challenging the academy’s performance
  • Strategically supporting in the planning and monitoring of the academy’s direction
  • Ensuring the agreed curriculum is well taught
  • Deciding how the academy can encourage pupils’ spiritual, moral and cultural development
  • Ensuring the academy provides a quality Education for all pupils including those with special needs
  • Reviewing and approving academy specific policies and procedures
  • Meeting with Ofsted inspectors when the academy is inspected
  • Visiting the academy during the school day as a link governor to gain understanding of the academy strengths and areas of development
  • Undertaking relevant governor training (e.g. safeguarding / Data Protection)

EVAT offers new governors a comprehensive and supportive induction with continued support from the Trust’s Governance and Compliance Manager.

EVAT places governors at the heart of how each academy operates. They generally do not make decisions (with exception of approving academy specific policies). As long as they act within the law and take appropriate advice, governors are protected from any financial liability for the decisions taken by the Trust.
